Orders from construction companies in Germany rose in August, driven by a number of large contracts. The infrastructure construction sector has benefited from this boom more than the building construction sector.
The Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday in Wiesbaden that orders, after excluding the impact of rising prices and calendar and seasonal factors, increased in August by 23 percent compared to the previous month of July, marking the strongest rise since the start of the data record in 1991.
The orders of the infrastructure construction sector increased by 31.6%, exceeding the increase recorded in the building construction sector, which amounted to 12.4%.
In a more stable comparison of three months, the main construction sector, with its various branches, recorded a clear increase in orders by 7.6% compared to the previous three months. During the same period, the infrastructure construction sector increased by 13.8%, compared to a limited increase of 0.6% in the building construction sector.
Revenue from the main construction sector, adjusted for prices, was $12.24 billion (€10.9 billion) in August, an increase of 10.1 percent compared to the same month last year. After excluding the impact of the price rise, the activity recorded a growth of 4.9%.
During the same period, the number of workers in the sector increased by 1.5% to reach 548 thousand people.
